Mapping the Danish wood pellet market in 2018

Denmark | March 2019 - October 2019

Ea Energy Analyses has carried out a wood pellet survey of the total supply of wood pellets to the Danish market in 2018, on behalf of the Danish Energy Agency. Ea Energy Analysis conducted the same study in 2016 (read about the study here).

The study showed that wood pellet consumption in Denmark was just over half a million tonnes higher in 2018 than in 2016. The increase was seen in both large-scale coal-fired power plants, and in smaller installations in private households, as well as in industry, institutions and public services.

This increase is attributed to the fact that the conversion from coal to biomass at several large plants has been fully phased in from 2017. At the same time, the interest in wood pellet stoves have increased among private consumers in recent years.

The study also considered wood pellet prices on the Danish market.

Methodology

The market survey information came from four studies:

  • Questionnaire to Danish producers, importers and dealers of wood pellets
  • Request for import information from a selection of Danish thermal plants and CHP plants using wood pellets
  • Extract from the Danish Energy Producer Census (“Energiproducenttællingen”) for 2018
  • Telephone interviews with industry actors.

The project ran from March to October 2019.
