Biomass usage and the potential for CCS

Denmark | June 2023 - March 2024

Danish green think tank CONCITO published the report Optimeret biomasseanvendelse til el- og fjernvarmeproduktion mod 2040” in 2021, which shows that biomass usage for energy purposes will be considerably reduced towards 2040. Since a number of changes has happened within the framework of the energy sector since 2021, CONCITO wanted an update of this analysis.

Ea has done a further development of the analysis and assessed the consequences of higher carbon permit prices, higher gas prices, the new LULUCF regulations in EU (higher biomass prices), as well as the implementation of the “green tax reform” in Denmark (phasing in new carbon taxes). Furthermore, the socioeconomics of setting up CCS at waste and biomass fired plants was investigated and the experiences from the rollout of large heat pumps in the district heating were considered.

The analysis was carried out in four scenarios and had a number of sensitivity analyses of the willingness to pay for carbon capture.

The resulting report Biomasseanvendelse og potentialet for CCS i forsyningssektoren can be downloaded on this page.

The project ran from June 2023 to March 2024.
