The West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) province, with main islands Lombok and Sumbawa, pledged a course of having 60% renewable energy in Lombok’s electricity system by 2030, 100% renewable energy in the whole province’s grid in 2040, and net zero emissions for all energy sectors by 2050. The pledge was the first of its kind in an Indonesian context.
The Danish Energy Agency (DEA) has been a close partner with authorities on Lombok for several years and will provide support for achieving the targets. The local partners include ESDM, PLN and other organisations from the energy sector. Specifically, the DEA aimed to help produce an “Energy masterplan”, with analyses on how the West Nusa Tenggara province may meet the targets.
Ea supported the work on the energy masterplan, which works as a tool to show relevant development pathways, while also analysing key barriers and enablers for their implementation.
The project comprised four work packages covering a mapping of the current status and pathways, power sector modelling in Balmorel, support to the DEA for pathways for action, and financial and social analyses.
Work commenced in September 2022 and was finished by December 2023.
