In 2020, the Danish government initiated a cooperation with the Ethiopian government on long-term energy planning and modelling.
The aim of the partnership was to build capacity at MoWIE, EEP (and other partners), within energy planning, to ensure the Ethiopian government was no longer reliant upon external input for making decisions regarding development of their power system. Additionally, programme activities provided input to the latest versions of the 10-year Ethiopian Power System Development Plan.
To meet the objective of further developing the energy planning competences of the Ethiopian modelling teams, Ea Energy Analyses carried out training courses in the power system model Balmorel, building on the activities and capacity building from previous training courses taking place in 2020 and 2021.
Another objective was to support the update of the 10-year generation and transmission plan, including support to EEP for using Balmorel and other tools, discussion of the modelling data and assumptions, and identification relevant model improvements.
The project was carried out for the Danish Energy Agency, and it ran from September 2021 to July 2023.
