Ea Energy Analyses is supporting the Danish Energy Agency in projects as part of the Energy Partnership Programme between Viet Nam and Denmark. This project is part of the on-going activities focused on “Capacity Development for long-range energy sector planning with Electricity and Renewable Energy Agency of Vietnam (EREA)”.
The project goal was improving the modelling set-up of the Vietnamese Balmorel model, which was used for scenario simulations supporting the Vietnamese Power Development Plan 8 (PDP8). Additionally, the project included on-going support to the Vietnamese consultants who were in charge of the model simulations for the PDP8, as well as one training session on result handling with the Balmorel BERSERQ Tool (developed by Ea).
Model developments that were implemented included topics such as: 1) health costs of pollutants included in the least cost optimisation, improved representation of 2) offshore wind and 3) utility scale solar resources, 4) implementation of rooftop solar technologies, 5) modelling of Vietnam’s neighbours Laos, Cambodia and Thailand, 6) first implementation of demand response and 7) implementation of strategic reserve requirements.
The project ran from November 2019 to October 2020.
