In 2020, Pakistan approved a policy for renewable energy, which includes the targets of having 20% renewables (up from 4%) in the energy mix in 2025, and to reach 30% by 2030. The planned distribution is to be 2/3 solar energy and 1/3 wind energy. This is to be a part of an expansion of electricity production meant to meet the rising demand and reduce endemic blackouts.
In order to reach the targets, there is a need to improve the capacity for energy planning and integration of renewable energy within the energy authorities.
The Danish Energy Agency and Energinet provide experience from work in other partner countries with similar challenges, to ensure the energy authorities in Pakistan gain confidence in managing a larger share of renewables in the grid.
Ea Energy Analyses has assisted with capacity building with local authorities, including training in the use of the power system model Balmorel. As a part of the project, a Pakistani version of the model has been set up.
